This two-pronged program includes Shasta Union High School District comprehensive high schools Enterprise, Foothill and Shasta plus two SUHSD charter schools, University Preparatory School and Redding School of the Arts.
High school students will have opportunities to enroll in yearlong classes in Mandarin Chinese or in Russian. Parents of kindergarten students at Redding School of the Arts may choose to have their students participate in an immersion class in Mandarin Chinese. The project plan includes adding a grade level per year at the K-8 RSA and adding higher levels of Chinese and Russian in the high schools.
Cultural activities include field trips for high school students to participate in various events in the language they are studying. Both facets of the program will plan and conduct annual community cultural events in Redding related to their language studies.
Students, teachers and members of the community will have opportunities to participate in four-day immersion classes in both Chinese and Russian beginning during the summer of 2007. Adults and students outside of the project schools will be charged a low-cost fee to participate. The classes will be interactive half-days where no English is spoken, leading to basic conversation skills in either Chinese or Russian.
Professional development for all SUHSD and charter school foreign language teachers is also included in the program.
